What are External threats?

An external threat refers to any potential danger or risk that originates from outside an organization. These threats can come in various forms, such as cyberattacks, natural disasters, economic downturns, or even competitors trying to undermine the success of a business. This type of threat is usually unpredictable and can cause significant damage, for example, disrupting operations, compromising sensitive data, or causing financial losses. As technology has continued to change and advance, the risk of external threats has become more prevalent, and it is crucial for organizations to remain vigilant and become proactive in identifying and mitigating these threats. By implementing robust security measures, staying informed about potential risks, and developing contingency plans, organizations can minimize their impact.

The ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline in 2021 is a good example of an external threat. Carried out by a group of hackers known as DarkSide, this attack led to the shutdown of one of the largest fuel pipelines in the United States. The hackers demanded millions of dollars in ransom in exchange for restoring access to the pipeline’s systems. This incident not only highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyber threats but also had immediate and widespread implications, leading to fuel shortages, price hikes, and concerns about national security.
